Frolix
The Great Psychic of Cerberus
Frolix was raised as an orphan, the son of a first-generation Psychic from Cerberus's experiments on the children of Brazzant and a mother kept hidden for her safety. His father was Baltix, one of the first Psychics, who went mad hurling his mind against the Aboleth. As a second-generation Psychic, Frolix entered the Academy with great intelligence and almost no power.
Perennus noticed him on his first day. When Frolix's progress proved too slow, the professor threw him from the mages' tower to force an emotional awakening. Frolix stopped his fall at the last moment. Perennus next brought him too close to the captive Aboleth in Marcin Sobiesansky's laboratory. The creature seized his mind and made him tear out his own eyes.
Blindness changed how Frolix understood perception. He learned to sense the world through thought, widened that sense through daily training, and borrowed the sight of the cat he carried on his shoulder. After the battle with Qormuza, Vidock used a sample taken from the beholder to give him new eyes and alter his body. Frolix gained several of the creature's powers without surrendering his Psychic abilities.
Frolix preferred control to destruction. He weakened an opponent's mind before dominating it, used darkness to hide what he was attempting, and developed psychometry, the ability to enter the memories held by an object. In Perennus's tournament, he defeated Brisé and Jérôme le Rayonnant without harming either of them. He then sold Aldor the final because prestige had no use to him.
His work with Vidock on Bork's medallion outlived Vidock's body. After Jérôme murdered the inventor, Frolix entered Bork's demiplane through psychometry and found Vidock's mind inside. He carried it back within his own. Vidock has remained there ever since: a second intelligence, adviser, and inventor sharing Frolix's senses.
Frolix first died in the Minotaur's labyrinth after mistrusting the creature and trying to escape. Armure restored him with Aldor's mana and a resurrection diamond, repairing his body while preserving his beholder eyes. During the war for the Ark, his telekinesis destroyed the seventeen amphorae powering Flavius Marcus's Divine Right, and his psychometry exposed the route Marcus Crassus had taken into the Underdark.
Inside Gérard Alois's Time Sphere, Frolix and Vidock created Coherent Story by building plausible false minds and attacking them from within. The spell later protected Aldor, Stoneheart, and Frolix against Jerax. In the same battle, Frolix discovered Baltix, Sven, and Skarde alive as heads grafted into Sobiesansky's torso. He met them inside Stoneheart's mind when they turned against their captor. All three died with Sobiesansky. Frolix survived the alchemist's final verchoix command by forcing his Psychic power inward and mastering the worm.
Cauchemar later trapped him in a Phantasm built from that memory: a living head sewn into Sobiesansky's body beside the other Psychics. Aldor reminded him who he was; Frolix seized the dream, erased it, and woke his companions. Daviau Morin killed him soon afterward. Aldor and Armure restored him again with their last diamond. He returned stronger, and not quite the same.
Frolix was one of the five apprentices who brought down Archon. In the Free Era, the Great Psychic lives on the Crassus Peninsula, usually blindfolded and levitating. Unlike his companions, he proudly rules nothing.
