Character
Charlie Stoneheart
The empathic genius of abjuration
Son of Lucius. Competitive, loyal, and initially arrogant, he developed genuine respect for his opponents after suffering defeat.
He masters sigils, programmable traps, and the magic contract. His finest work is not a barrier: on Telus, during the downtime after the Minotaur, he enchanted Gyllyn's two rapiers by opening the ritual to other casters and binding their magic into the steel rather than his own — Aldor's fire in the first, Frolix's Psychic power in the second, which came out of a working with a 10% chance of failure doing something no level 7 enchantment should do. He has never repeated either. During a negotiation, he bound Brisé, a white dragon, to several mages at a DC far beyond that of his usual spells.
Through divination, he reconstructed the unfinished work of Jason Stoneheart, an unhappy and mediocre relative who died by suicide unnoticed by anyone. Charlie found a secret within it that changed his understanding of magic.
Through his mother, Catherine, Charlie is also the grandson of Émile Adelbrand. He combines Stoneheart sigils and traps with the Adelbrand release clauses of curses. Lucius sent him a sealed family grimoire through Gérard Alois. Unable to open it, Alois unknowingly carried Reactive Dispel, Émile's defense against him.
Charlie opened that grimoire inside Alois's Time Sphere. He mastered Shroud in one day and spent the remaining nineteen on stronger family magic. In the battle that followed, his barriers kept Aldor and Frolix alive against Sobiesansky and Jerax. He alone carried no verchoix, because he had begun his studies under Christophe Rolland and Lucius would never have allowed Sobiesansky's worm inside his son. Sobiesansky tried to dominate him after ordering the other worms to attack; the three Psychics grafted into the alchemist turned on their captor before the spell could take hold.
