Jerax

The Aboleth behind Cerberus's Psychic Project

Jerax was an ancient Aboleth from another plane, stranded in the world before Archon sealed planar travel. Her massive body was covered in iridescent scales, and her visible blue Psychic aura made droplets of water rise and fall with her breathing. She possessed tremendous regenerative power and was considered the most powerful kind of Psychic monster; Sobiesansky's alchemists believed that, unrestrained, she could kill every thinking creature within one hundred kilometers.

Jerax once controlled the dwarven mine of Kal'dach through mental domination. Perennus Albion resisted her, reached her mind, and petrified her with a word before carrying the statue back to Cerberus. For thirty years, Marcin Sobiesansky kept her chained inside a marble pool. Copper pipes continuously pumped neurotoxin into her body while diviners monitored her mental activity and adjusted the dose faster than her regeneration could purge it.

Sobiesansky harvested Jerax's cerebriles, living organs of thought that feed on Psychic energy, and implanted them into children taken from Brazzant. Six survived as the first Cerberan Psychics; their descendants inherited the power. Jerax was therefore both prisoner and living source of the Psychic Project. Sobiesansky preserved her because his research remained dependent upon her.

Even under poison, Jerax could invade a nearby mind. She communicated through thought, searched memories for weaknesses, and presented them as vivid experiences. Her reconstructions could include events her victim had only overheard or absorbed from another person's memory. She used genuine revelations selectively, turning truth itself into a weapon before offering power, certainty, and restored order under her rule.

When Frolix entered her reach, Jerax showed him how Perennus had massacred his clan and delivered its children to Sobiesansky. She exposed his descent from the Telus family and taught him about the Ark, the Partage, and the censors. Once his distrust overcame his caution, she accepted his service and seized his body. She forced him to tear out his own eyes, calling the mutilation a sacrifice that would open the eyes of his mind, then awakened his dormant Psychic power. Through him, she ruptured a poison line and attacked the laboratory staff. As her strength returned, her domination spread from mind to mind until Perennus touched her and petrified her again. Frolix remained blind, but the ordeal awakened the Psychic perception that replaced his sight.

During the war for the Ark, Sobiesansky carried Jerax's petrified body into the Underdark inside a wooden crate. When his former students turned against him, he restored her and ordered her to kill them, then dominate Marcus Crassus. Jerax understood his intentions but accepted no authority beyond the immediate fight.

She broke Gyllyn's resistance, forced Frolix to retreat, and raised an entire cavern through epic telekinesis. Coherent Story kept her from seizing the returning apprentices. Aldor answered with Battlefield, which trapped her inside its arena, burned away her final attack, and prevented her teleportation. His Fireball destroyed her completely.
