Qormuza

The Beholder Beneath Cerberus

Qormuza was a beholder who ruled a drow domain beneath Cerberus. He wore a white cloak and filled his palace with monsters, traps, and nectar pressed in the orchards by his drow servants. He learned his visitors' language by reading one of their minds before they reached his throne.

He was powerful enough to be arrogant and cautious enough to avoid anything that might prove stronger. When Aldor's companions crossed his dungeon, Qormuza was more interested in their opinion of its failed puzzle than in killing them. He offered to make them servants. Then Frolix began a Psychic spell, and the welcome ended.

Qormuza fought through telekinesis, domination, and death magic. He nearly destroyed the company, but Glandir weakened his mind and Frolix left him unable to cast. With no escape left, Qormuza did the one thing beholders fear: he fell asleep. A sleeping beholder doubles its power and bends matter and time, but its dreams may create new beholders that kill it.

That was Endrass's plan. Disguised as the dwarf Kauche, the dream dragon had joined the expedition so Qormuza would underestimate it. He entered the sleeping beholder, rewarded the survivors, and used Qormuza's power to become a Great Wyrm. Frolix took a sample from the beholder, which Vidock later used to create his new eyes.

During the Nightmare War, Frolix briefly seized Qormuza's mind and turned him against another beholder. Aldor later killed Qormuza, breaking the control Cauchemar held over Ferothar.
