Dream Dragon
Medium to Large Psychic dragon—summon and polymorph template
Dream Dragons are intelligent magical creatures whose bodies convert mana into stable Psychic power. They remain remarkably small: a Dream Dragon is Medium through nearly its entire life and becomes Large only as a Great Wyrm. Individuals vary widely in appearance.
Other dragons despise this small stature and are rarely gentle with them. Dream Dragons survive through concealment, assumed identities, and mastery of sleeping minds rather than physical power. Very few live long enough to become Great Wyrms. Cauchemar, also known as Endrass, survived for centuries behind mortal identities before reaching that age.
A Dream Dragon becomes available with Summon or Polymorph Level 2. The five profiles represent recognized stages of growth.
Dream Dragon (Polymorph & Summon Template)
Choose a known profile whose listed level is no higher than the level of Summon or Polymorph actually cast. Generate its body from the locked Spell DC; see Magical Creature Templates. The template adds no bonus or penalty to any Save.
Natural Breath DC. A natural dragon calculates the DC of its Breath Weapon from Constitution. A dragon created by Summon or a creature transformed by Polymorph instead uses the controlling spell's locked Spell DC.
Like every dragon, a Dream Dragon is immune to sleep, but not to other mental magic. In particular, it is not immune to Phantasm. Its immunity merely prevents an enemy from gaining Phantasm's +25% DC against it by putting it to sleep first.
Combat Profile
| Characteristic | Level 2 | Level 4 | Level 6 | Level 8 | Level 10 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Age | Hatchling | Young Dragon | Adult Dragon | Wyrm | Great Wyrm |

| Reach | 5 ft | 5 ft | 5 ft | 5 ft | 10 ft |
| DR | 0 | 0 | 8 | 16 | 32 |
The Dream Dragon uses the standard Ground Speed generated by DEX. Its wings and quadrupedal anatomy prevent it from manipulating tools like a humanoid. Its claws can still seize, carry, and grapple creatures or objects its size permits.
Physical Attacks
| Attack | Level 2 | Level 4 | Level 6 | Level 8 | Level 10 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bite | 1d6 + higher of STR or DEX | 2d6 + higher of STR or DEX | 3d6 + higher of STR or DEX | 4d6 + higher of STR or DEX | 5d6 + higher of STR or DEX |
| Claw | 1d4 + higher of STR or DEX | 2d4 + higher of STR or DEX | 3d4 + higher of STR or DEX | 4d4 + higher of STR or DEX | 5d4 + higher of STR or DEX |
| Wing Strike | 1d4 + higher of STR or DEX | 2d4 + higher of STR or DEX | 3d4 + higher of STR or DEX | 4d4 + higher of STR or DEX | 5d4 + higher of STR or DEX |
Claw. The dragon can replace the damage with a grapple attempt under the normal grapple rules.
Wing Strike. A wing can cleave creatures on the same side of the dragon under the normal cleave rules. Its impact may push a creature when size, position, and the GM's prescribed chance allow it.
Sleep Breath
The dragon replaces all its Attacks for the tick with a cone of Psychic power. It deals no damage. Every creature in the cone makes a Will Save against the template's DC. On a failure, it suffers the listed version of Sleep. The breath can begin once per round.
| Characteristic | Level 2 | Level 4 | Level 6 | Level 8 | Level 10 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sleep spell level | 1 | 3 | 3 | 3 | 3 |
| Cone | 15 ft | 20 ft | 30 ft | 40 ft | 60 ft |
Sleep alone does not create lasting control. It gives the Dream Dragon a vulnerable body and the +25% DC needed to make Phantasm much harder to resist. A successful Phantasm, not the breath, is what can hold a victim asleep for an extraordinary length of time.
Restful Dreams
A willing creature that sleeps under the Dream Dragon's care receives a perfectly restorative night and is permanently cured of sleep apnea. The dragon can care for one sleeper per point of INT at the same time. Beginning at Level 4, a full night also increases each sleeper's Charisma for the following day. Use the percentage or the minimum flat bonus, whichever is greater.
| Dream Dragon Level | Charisma for the following day |
|---|---|
| 2 | No bonus |
| 4 | +10%, minimum +1 |
| 6 | +20%, minimum +2 |
| 8 | +30%, minimum +3 |
| 10 | +50%, minimum +5 |
Walking Shape
From Level 2 onward, a Dream Dragon can assume a Human, Dwarf, or Drow body. This racial transformation follows Polymorph with the following exceptions:
- It targets only the dragon, requires no learned pattern or spell slot, takes 2 ticks, and lasts indefinitely. Returning to dragon form takes 1 tick.
- The dragon chooses the appearance of each mortal identity. It uses the anatomy and physical traits of the corresponding Human, Dwarf, or Drow template.
- It retains its own mind, Psychic reserve, racial spells, supernatural traits, and senses. A Drow body does not create a second mana reserve or grant another copy of the Drow's racial spells. Sleep Breath requires the anatomy of the dragon form.
- Equipment carried when the dragon transforms is hidden and inactive under the new form, as normal for Polymorph. Equipment acquired or donned afterward can be used normally.
- The true dragon body continues to age while the dragon lives in another shape.
Psychic Racial Spells
Racial spells require neither speech nor gesture. The list is cumulative: a higher-level column retains every spell introduced earlier, and spells with scaling versions improve to the level shown.
| Racial spell | Level 2 | Level 4 | Level 6 | Level 8 | Level 10 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sleep | 1 | 3 | 3 | 3 | 3 |
| Illusion | 1 | 3 | 5 | 7 | 10 |
| Mental Fog | — | — | 3 | 3 | 3 |
| Dominate | — | — | 5 | 8 | 8 |
| Phantasm | — | 4 | 6 | 8 | 10 |
A summoned Dream Dragon uses the innate spell-slot reserve granted by Summon. It can cast any version of a racial spell that it knows and can pay for. The caster can give it additional slots while creating it, and Spell Conduit can provide further slots after its creation. Sleep Breath and Walking Shape are racial abilities and spend no spell slots.
A creature using Polymorph receives the knowledge of these spells but no free uses and no second reserve. Every casting spends one of the transformed creature's real spell slots of the appropriate level. The racial spell is Psychic regardless of the mana color converted from that reserve.
Mind
A summoned Dream Dragon has the intelligence, judgment, language, instincts, and magical knowledge of its species, but begins with the fresh consciousness described by Summon. Its small size and dangerous society inform its caution without dictating every choice.
A caster using Polymorph retains their own mind. The form imposes no personality and grants no dragon memories, mortal identity, or personal experience.
