Polymarch

He was born on Cerberus, in the country that had spent three centuries refusing Archon. He worked as a mercenary there, and it was on a Cerberan contract, beside a young Christophe Leblanc, that he found the armor. Afterward he left for the Ark and became Polymarch.

It was Archon the whole time. The god had split himself with Soul Odyssey and lived a second life among men with no one the wiser—including, as far as anyone can tell, his own censors.

The contract that found him the armor was arranged for him. Censor Sylla admitted as much when Polymarch knelt by a river and asked why he had been sent: the idea came from a cyclops's vision, and it mattered that he be in that particular band of adventurers. What they were really after was Fleur de Bataille, forged by Archon for a paladin of the Adams line and hidden by their descendants ever since, because it makes its wearer too strong to use honestly. It conceals itself from anyone it does not want. Sylla told him to look for a damaged falconer's glove.

He put it on, walked back into the next room, and killed the count who owned it with one stroke. The armor approved—you will be the hunter, the torturer, the one who takes and gives nothing back—and the bloodied glove became black plate.

As the Torturer Polymarch he was one of Sylla's five best warriors: an oversized spiked flail on a chain, a shield, and a warhorse that gallops on air and water. Marcus Crassus wanted him dead and never dared, because he was Sylla's favorite. He had never lost a fight.

He lost on Zurion, poisoned by a shadow-arrow through a gap under the arm, and cut his own throat rather than be taken, declaring his love for Archon. Aldor wore Fleur de Bataille afterward.
