Wooden Cup

Catch a spell or the magical memory of a place

Available Levels
9

Wooden Cup catches magic from a nearby area and holds it suspended inside a wooden cup. The caster chooses one active spell effect or gathers the area's spell memory.

Catching an Active Spell

The caster must have a higher caster level than the spellcaster who created the effect, then succeed on a caster level check: 1d20 + CL against 10 + the creator's CL. On a failure, the cup catches nothing and the slot is lost.

Success copies the effect without ending or weakening the original. An Elemental Wall of fire, for example, keeps burning where it was cast while an identical wall waits inside the cup. The copy keeps the original caster level, spell DC, shape, and remaining duration, but its duration is suspended while stored.

The caster can release the copy at a point within Close range as a 1-tick action. It resumes there under its original rules. Releasing it ends Wooden Cup. If the cup is not released before this spell's duration ends, the copy fades.

Catching Spell Memory

Spell memory is the memory held by magical particles: images, sounds, and emotions absorbed from a place. Wooden Cup gathers those particles without a caster level check. The cup may preserve a rich illusion or traces that a divination spell can later explore. Releasing the memory takes 1 tick and recreates it as an illusion in a nearby area; divination may instead examine it while it remains in the cup.
