Mountain Troll

Huge giant—summon and polymorph template

The Mountain Troll is a species distinct from the smaller Hill Troll and the desert-dwelling Sand Troll. Three times the height of a person, it fills a mountain pass with stone-colored flesh and closes wounds while enemies are still making them. Do not fight one in a corridor; it is the corridor.

Its first profile becomes available with Summon or Polymorph Level 8.

Choose a known profile whose listed level is no higher than the level of Summon or Polymorph actually cast. Generate its body from the locked Spell DC; see Magical Creature Templates.

The Mountain Troll uses the standard Ground Speed generated by DEX. Its hands can open doors, carry creatures and objects, throw rocks, grapple, and wield enormous improvised weapons. Its intelligence, rather than its anatomy, limits elaborate work.

Attacks

Attack Level 8 Level 10
Claw 5d8 + STR 8d8 + STR
Bite 5d6 + STR 8d6 + STR
Rock Throw 5d8 + STR 8d8 + STR

A Bite replaces one Claw attack.

Rock Throw. Once per round, the troll can replace one attack with a rock thrown up to 200 ft. A suitable rock or piece of debris must be within reach.

Grapple. The Mountain Troll uses the normal grapple rules with its Huge size and 15 ft Reach; see Martial Combat and Defenses. The GM adjudicates what it can lift, restrain, or throw.

Regeneration

At the start of each tick, the Mountain Troll recovers 10% of its maximum HP without spending an action. It can regenerate a total of 500% of its maximum HP per day. Once this reserve is exhausted, its regeneration stops until the reserve returns.

Regeneration continues below 0 HP, and the troll rises as soon as its HP returns above 0. Fire or acid damage suppresses regeneration for one full round. A troll dies permanently only if it reaches its death threshold of −25% maximum HP while regeneration is suppressed.

The Ephemeral Aegis of Polymorph still returns a transformed creature to its original body immediately upon reaching 0 HP. Without that protection, regeneration can save the transformed creature before the form is permanently destroyed.

A Simple, Experienced Mind

A summoned Mountain Troll is slow-minded but not ignorant. It knows its territory, recognizes recurring dangers, uses rocks and obstacles, and solves immediate physical problems. It understands concrete orders, but abstractions and plans with many conditions remain beyond it. A caster using Polymorph retains their own mind.
