Suggestion

An order that arrives with its own reason to obey it

Available Levels
13

Suggestion gives a creature one immediate order and a reason to obey it. The creature must hear the sentence and, at level 1, understand its language. The spell can also bind the caster to an intention of their own.

An Order

On a failed Will Save, the creature obeys one non-harmful order for 1 round (3 ticks). The order may include a plausible falsehood: Take your pistol apart; it is jammed. The creature believes that reason while the spell lasts and acts on it using its own judgement.

The order cannot make the creature wound itself or enter physical danger. As with Dominate, ruin alone is not danger: a creature can be made to lower a drawbridge or dispel its own Barrier.

An order to hand over, drop or set aside an object affects only secondary equipment, such as a purse, key or spare blade. It cannot affect a drawn weapon, shield, worn armor or the ring currently sustaining a Barrier.

After three ticks, the compulsion ends but its consequences remain. A pistol stays dismantled and a drawbridge stays lowered. The creature decides whether to finish an incomplete task. In combat, it knows it was compelled. Outside combat, the false reason usually remains after the compulsion ends.

Self-Suggestion

The caster may instead bind themselves to one intention: I will reach the door. I will not speak. I will hold this line. No Save is made.

Until the intention is fulfilled, nothing can divert the caster from it—not fear, pain, exhaustion, persuasion or another enchantment. Charm and other compulsions can still affect the caster, but cannot turn them from that intention.

The self-suggestion lasts up to 1 minute per caster level and cannot be abandoned. It does not protect the caster from danger; if the chosen path becomes deadly, the caster continues.

Spell Scaling

Spell Level Effect
1 Both uses above. A target must understand the spoken language.
3 No shared language is required. The target understands the suggestion's meaning directly.

Hearing the Suggestion

The target must still hear the spell at every level. Silence stops an arcane casting, and a deaf creature is immune to it. Level 3 removes the language barrier, not the need to hear.

A Psychic casting places the sentence directly in the mind, without speech or gesture. An alchemical dose carries one sentence fixed when prepared; the drinker hears it in their own voice moments later.
