Wraith

Medium incorporeal undead, Raise Undead template—the specter that drains life

A wraith has no body. It is a hateful shadow, a shred of soul frozen in death. Ordinary blades pass through it harmlessly; only enchanted steel and magic can reach it. Life withers wherever its chilling hand falls, and those it kills rise in turn. It is the accomplished necromancer's assassin.

A Medium creature, the wraith becomes available with Raise Undead at Level 9.

Wraith (Raise Undead Template)

In this template, “DC” means the necromancer's spell DC. Values marked XX are variable: multiply the table value by caster level. The columns are indexed by the level of the Raise Undead spell.

Wraith, Medium undead (incorporeal)
Speed: fly XX ft (passes through matter)
HP: XX
DR: — (see Immaterial)
Saves: Reflex DC, Fortitude—none, Will—no mind (body magic opposes the DC)

Attacks:

  • Chilling Touch: Base damage 1d8+XX (necrotic), then drain (see Life Drain)

Immaterial A wraith has no flesh. Mundane weapons pass through it without effect. Only an enchanted weapon of Level 1 or higher (see 11) or a spell can harm it. In turn, it ignores armor DR, passes through walls and floors, and floats above the ground. This is its only true defense; it has no DR of its own.

Undead Nature An undead; see 3.

Standing Orders A wraith follows only the simple, permanent orders of its necromancer (see Raise Undead).

Life Drain When its touch lands, the target loses maximum HP equal to the damage dealt until a true rest, and the wraith recovers the same amount of HP. A creature whose maximum HP falls to 0 dies and rises on the next round as a Skeleton or Zombie in the necromancer's service.

Light Aversion In bright magical light, such as the Light spell, or in full daylight, the wraith is weakened. The GM imposes a clear disadvantage, reducing its movement and halving its drain. The light does not destroy the wraith, but it flees from the glare.
