Myveen Tracy

Professor of transmutation, and the examiner who wanted both of them turned away

Myveen Tracy teaches transmutation at the Academy of Cerberus, and the conjuration of plants in particular. Dark curls, green eyes, spectacles, and a black witch's robe worked with botanical motifs that ripple when she moves, as though small leaves and vines were growing across the cloth.

She sat the Apprentice test beside Christophe Rolland, and she discussed the candidates as though they were not in the room. Aldor was a merchant's son, which she explained at length: the servant who watches his master long enough begins to believe he can take his place. Gyllyn was a baker's son, and her recommendation was to send him away at once and save the time. She was overruled both times, by the same colleague.

She was there for what followed. Aldor's key came up as a mass of burning metal that set the grimoire smoking and boiled the water in the glass on the table. Myveen asked permission to destroy it, said Dissolution, and watched the colour drain out of her own spell instead. Rolland's failed after hers. She reads magic well enough—she runs Detection of the Magic silently, and she called Gyllyn's key of flame an illusion rather than a conjuration on sight—but she does not feel auras the way Rolland does, and she had to cast to see what he had already noticed.

She also referees the end-of-year joute: the rules recited to teams she has never met, then good luck, then perhaps I will see some of you next year.

Years later she was in the Underdark studying drow nectar with Vidock, the orphan out of a street gang, who was her student and then her lover. He learned production from her and began costing out how to make it at scale.
